What Happens?
Rehearsals may be in a few formats:
Tutti - conductors take the full orchestra through their repertoire, rehearsing tricky corners as they go.
Conductor-led sectionals - the orchestra split into their sections (i.e., all strings together and everyone else together) and a conductor rehearses each section.
Peer-led sectionals - the orchestra split into their sections and the section leaders lead the rehearsal.
Tutor-led setionals - the orchestra split into their individual sections (i.e., 1st Vln, 2nd Vln, Viola, Cello & Bass, Wind, Brass & Percussion) and a sectional tutor (a professional tutor who plays your instrument) rehearses the repertoire, giving pointers, techniques, etc. which are specific to you.
Rehearsals have a short break in the middle to allow everyone to catch up with each other and catch a breath. Rehearsals are usually followed by a social activity (drinks in a local bar, quiz, karaoke, etc.).
